Candle at the Basilica of the Annunciation

Light a candle

Light a candle where the angel came to Mary

Write what is on your heart. We carry it into the basilica, light a real candle for it, and send you a video of your flame burning in Nazareth - once, or every month.

The Grotto

Verbum Caro Hic Factum Est

Your candle burns where Mary lived

Beneath the basilica is the Grotto - the cave tradition holds was Mary's home, where the angel came to her. The altar's inscription does not say the Word was made flesh. It says it was made flesh here. Candles have burned before it for centuries. Yours can be one of them.

How it works

Three steps, a real candle - once or every month

  1. 1

    Write your intention

A name, a person, a hope, a grief - as short or as long as you like. We do not publish it and we do not share it.

  2. 2

    We light your candle

We light a real candle for your intention at the basilica in Nazareth - wax, wick and flame. Not a symbol rendered in software. We do this once, or every month - as you choose.

  3. 3

    You receive the video

Within seven days of each lighting we email you a video of your candle burning, so you can see it was done.

The church above

The largest church in the Middle East

Completed in 1969 over a Byzantine church and a Crusader cathedral - each raised above the same grotto - its upper church opens through a great well to the cave below, so the two are never quite separate.

You are not the first

The whole world leaves something here

The courtyard walls carry Marian mosaics given by nations across the world - Latvia, Gozo and Malta, Japan, Cameroon, Venezuela. People who cannot come have always found ways to be present. This is one more.
